I've been getting some written pieces submitted by applicants and during this time of preparing for another MORASS issue, I'm tempted to steal their work just to fill in 6 blank newsletter pages. Of course, I realize I won't be in the least minded to secure their services so I scrapped that idea as soon as it entered my mind.
Not that they're not good. Well, most of them are probably people who believe, as Russell Baker has so eloquently put together, that "the only thing I was fit for was to be a writer, and this notion rested solely on my suspicion that I would never be fit for real work, and that writing didn't require any."
One of them was a guy who was so enamored of a local celebrity that he submitted a piece on "intellectual and emotional quotient" peppered with the phrase (more like a non-phrase) "in loved." That email went straight to, well, another folder.

And so, I want to give him a copy of the most basic English grammar book I can find. Well, it probably wouldn't matter in case he decides to ask local celebrity out - she's about as inarticulate as, if not more than he is. And where the hell is either intelligence or emotional quotient in that piece? Definitely not in the parts I scrapped. Oh well. What did I expect? Everyone thinks they're a writer.
There is about 1 in 20 applicants who I might be minded to hire. But PJW has a different idea of a great writer. (You already know about Misogynistic Tail, of course. Read my previous entry.) He can't be too young, he has to come from a reputable school, he has to have an English or communications related degree. Only John Updike would pass that. Heck, even I am not that and I'm wondering now why he asked me to work for him. I must be so charming hahahaha!
